Dancesport - Viennese Waltz
| |
The Viennese Waltz is the dance were couples can show stamina and spatial movements and side swing
.The dance provides a restricted number of figures and the music counts 60 Bars/min which speaks for itself. Dancing a Viennese
Waltz is comparable with running a 400 mtr on the athletic track. Often you see on the
dance floor the same the same errors as on the 400 mtr track, most of the competitors start to
energetic but can't keep the quality to the same level and start to make technical errors
due to the lack of stamina!
And After this dance The Slow Foxtrot is coming......
Be aware to show, the same or even a higher level of spatial dancing and speed of movement
than those competitors dancing in front and behind you, with those you are compared easily
by the judges!!
Musical Phrasing is hardly seen in the Amateur ranks and I think it could be easily added to
your existing Viennese Waltz routine...... just do it!!

The Viennese waltz originally comes from the South German Alps Area. During the 18th century the dances:
Weller, Walzer and Ländler were found, this last dance the Ländler is originally the forerunner of our Viennese Waltz.
Between 1800 and 1820 the steps and figures from the Ländler were reduced due to the speed of music
and the 6 step Viennese Walz was born.
During the Sixties a lot of discussion was going on between
Germany and the U.K concerning the number of Viennese Waltz variations allowed in Competitions. In 1983
the I.C.B.D. took the final decision: Natural and Reverse Turns, Natural and Reverse Fleckerls, The
Contra Check change from reverse fleckerl to natural fleckerl danced over one bar of music
In my opinion the may add more figures to the Viennese Waltz to stimulate the developemnt more in
a positive direction figures like: Throwaway Oversway, Natural Hinge line on right side,
Natural Off-beat Spins.

The Viennese Waltz is a progressive rotating dance with the accent on the first beat. Consider
when Waltzing around a Competition floor one, you or your partner is dancing an inner turn. The
flow and progression on the inner turn determine the flow and progression from the outside turn.
Often the Man makes to much progression on the innerturns which disturbs the balance form the Lady
in the out-site turn.
To much Sway on the firsts step of a Natural Turn may block the movement an natural flow of the
body in the Viennese Waltz. According to the rules the first step hasn't any sway!!! you may hold the
the preceding sway slightly at the beginning of step 1 and 4, closing the feet must not be
noticeable in the topline and head.
